Today I am doing a product review of a great Hawaiian product that I discovered after moving to Hawaii.

I first became familiar with spirulina last year. I was feeling sub-par and was looking for a supplement to address overall health. I have some homeopathic sense so I was not looking for a low-nutrient absorbing multi-vitamin. I knew I wanted something purer and of a high quality.
In early July, 2017 I spent a lot of time searching Google, YouTube and healthy living magazines trying to identify what in the world was going to make me feel better. It was quite a challenge because there wasn’t one particular ailment or condition. I just didn’t feel good. Some days I’d awaken with a terrible headache. Other days my hands hurt. Often my energy was low. I am generally a high energy person, often quoting the U.S. Army line; “I get more done before 7:00 a.m. than most people do all day”. But at the time I was not feeling that way at all.
After much research I decided to incorporate two things into my daily routine; activated charcoal for detoxing and reduction of swelling and spirulina for everything else. I want to share my insights on the spirulina choice.

Once spirulina was the choice the easy thing was choosing the Hawaiian Pacific variety. OKAY – YOU CONVINCED ME. NOW WHAT DO I DO WITH IT?
To maximize spirulina’s health benefits the loose powder form is the best way to ingest it. There are no binders or other additives needed to form tablets.
You can add a teaspoon to a glass of water and drink it like my husband does – but there’s a slight “marine-y” taste to it. As one who is not fond of most seafood, I think I’m more sensitive to than most to the taste. If you are going to try it, start with the Hawaiian Pacific type – I’ve heard and read that it is the best tasting by far.
If you like the taste of concentrated greens, you’ll probably actually like the taste of this spirulina. Its cleaner and less “earthy” than lesser brands.
- I usually add a teaspoon to orange juice and stir well.
- I even sprinkle over a salad or add some to some soup.
- My favorite way is to add it to a smoothie.
- You can even put a little spirulina powder into your dog’s food for a healthy boost.
It’s going to look an almost shocking, beautiful blue-green, but the flavor disappears into whatever you’re eating. It doesn’t take over like kale or other greens tend to do.
No time for smoothies or dealing with a powder? No worries! Hawaiian Spirulina also comes in tablets. It is recommended that you take 6 tablets a day. I only take 4; two in the morning and two mid-day. Please note that the powdered form is more cost-effective.
Are There Other Brands of Spirulina?
There are many producers of spirulina. Mostly in India and China. Often they have been found to be contaminated with lead, mercury and arsenic. Nutrex is known to be safe from heavy metals and other contaminants. Theirs is also free of sesame, peanuts and tree nuts.

Is spirulina a SUPERFOOD? I vote a big green YES! Just think of the benefits of having fresh fruits and veggies, including iron, minerals and anti-oxidants every day. We all know that would make us much healthier, but in today’s fast-paced world we just don’t always make it happen. Try some spirulina and see how much better you feel.
